Is Bromine Dangerous? Separating Hot Tub Facts from Fiction

by John O'Rourke on Jul 01 2025
Hello, hot tub enthusiasts. It’s time to debunk some common misconceptions about hot tubs. Identify facts from fiction. Determine what’s right, what's wrong, and what's downright head-scratching. In this episode (blog), we’ll be exploring: Is bromine dangerous?   First, what is bromine, anyway?  Bromine (chemical compound: Br) is a reddish-brown, volatile liquid chemical element that's a part of the halogen group on the periodic table. It's probably best known for its strong smell and is considered an intermediate between chlorine (Cl) and iodine (I) when its properties are examined.   Bromine has many applications, but it's most often used to sanitize water in pools, spas, and hot tubs. Its ability to safely control microorganisms and stabilize environments is also useful in other important areas. For instance, bromine-based ingredients are used in some pharmaceuticals and flame-resistant materials.  But Wait... Is Bromine Dangerous?  Both the EPA and Health Canada have approved sodium bromide as safe to use as a hot tub sanitizer. It's sold in hardware stores across the country.  The bromine you buy for your hot tub is not pure bromine; it’s a stable compound designed to slowly release a controlled amount of bromine into the water Of course, just like other household cleaning products in your home, it’s important to handle it with care. When it comes to handling bromine carefully, you need to:  Read the label and follow the instructions for safe use.  Store it in a cool, dry place out of the reach of sunlight.  Keep it properly sealed in its original container.  Use gloves while handling.  Avoid inhaling the fumes.   Make sure that the chemical dissolves fully before you use the hot tub to prevent eye and skin irritation. With proper use, products containing bromine are no more dangerous than other common household chemicals. Millions of people use bromine to sanitize their hot tubs each and every year!  Why Bromine is a Popular Choice for Hot Tub Owners  When it comes to keeping your hot tubs clean, bromine is a top-tier choice.   Unlike chlorine, bromine doesn't lose its potency when introduced to warmer water temperatures; rather, bromine continues to work, even when the water is quite hot.  This means your hot tub stays cleaner, longer, and you have fewer concerns about your water getting gross in the middle of a well-deserved dip. Plus, when used properly, it's a lot gentler on the skin and eyes – which is perfect for when you need a truly relaxing, long, deep soak in the hot tub.    Listen... nobody wants to take a dunk in a greenish, dirty hot tub. Doesn't sound very relaxing at all, does it? This isn't a Ninja Turtles spinoff, and we doubt you'll pop back out of that with any special abilities. In fact, it's far more likely to compromise your health.   That's why it's so important to keep your hot tub sanitized; not just for you, but for the longevity of the hot tub itself!   Bromine vs. Chlorine: A Side-by-Side Comparison  When you're looking to open the hot tub for the season, first, you've got to think about hot tub sanitation. Usually, chlorine and bromine are the top two choices. But how do you choose between the two? Chlorine is usually the one most people think of, but bromine is a strong contender. Should we break it down?  Sanitization Effectiveness   Hands down, bromine is the heavyweight champion when it comes to holding up in high-temperature water. It stays active much longer than chlorine, which is more likely to break down in higher temperatures. Don't get us wrong; chlorine is great for pools, but bromine is the top choice when you're operating a hot tub.   Managing Foul Odor & Irritation  Have you ever opened a pool or hot tub with chlorine – you know that familiar, harsh, chemical smell? Bromine doesn't have that problem. It's milder and isn't likely to burn/sting your skin and eyes, which means you can enjoy the water without feeling irritated.  pH Balance & Stability  Bromine is excellent when it comes to pH stability. It's more effective across a wider range of pH, which makes it so much easier when it comes to balancing out your hot tub. Chlorine, on the other hand, is much more sensitive to changes in pH and needs more frequent adjustments and must be monitored more closely.   Price and Accessibility  We won’t lie to you; bromine tends to fetch a bit more price than chlorine. But, just like a lot of things, it’s an investment! Investing in bromine means your hot tub is cleaner, the water is more stable, and it is less likely to irritate you or your guests. In certain areas, it can also be harder to find, but a lot of companies online sell it, and it can be found in several different hot tub products.   Chlorine vs. Bromine: Which Works Better?  We might seem biased in the way we talk about bromine, but the truth is, it all depends on your application and your priorities. If you need something gentle that lasts longer with a lot less maintenance, go with bromine. If you have a bit of a stricter budget and don’t mind the little extra effort, then chlorine still works.   BUT, just to recap, he’s a list of pros and cons for both:   Pros and Cons: Bromine vs. Chlorine  Bromine: Pros  More Stable in Hot Water: Maintains effectiveness in high-temperature environments, making it ideal for hot tubs and spas.  Longer Lasting: Remains active in water longer than chlorine, reducing the need for frequent applications.  Gentler on Skin and Eyes: Causes less irritation compared to chlorine, especially in sensitive users.  Effective Against Organic Contaminants: Better at breaking down oils, sweat, and other organic materials.  Less Odor: Produces a milder smell, improving the overall user experience.  Reactivates With Shocking: Bromine ions can be regenerated with shock treatments (more on this later), making it more economical over time.  Bromine: Cons  Higher Initial Cost: Bromine is typically more expensive than chlorine upfront.  Slower Dissolution: Takes longer to dissolve, requiring more careful application.  Light Sensitivity: Breaks down more quickly in direct sunlight, necessitating stabilizers or covered use.   Chlorine: Pros  Lower Cost: Cheaper, making it a budget-friendly choice for larger pools.  Fast-Acting: Works quickly to kill bacteria and sanitize water.  Widely Available: Easily accessible in stores and online.   Chlorine: Cons  Less Stable in Heat: Breaks down faster in warm water, requiring more frequent application in hot tubs or heated pools.  Harsh on Skin and Eyes: Can cause irritation, especially in sensitive individuals.  Strong Odor: Produces a noticeable “chlorine smell,” which some find unpleasant.  Byproduct Concerns: Forms chloramines when reacting with organic materials, reducing its effectiveness and increasing the need for shocking.  Understanding How Bromine Functions in Hot Tubs  OK! Now it’s time to do a little science, shall we? Let’s explore bromine a little deeper and figure out how it actually works in the hot tub environment.  Bromine Tablets vs. Granules  When looking for bromine as a compound, you usually find it available in two forms: granules or tablet form. Tablets tend to be more popular because they dissolve at a slower pace, meaning that the chemical is steadily disrupted. This is ideal for long-term use in hot tubs. Granules, however, are quick to act, but need more oversight and adjustment, making tablets the more favoured and convenient option for hot tub owners.   Maintaining Proper Bromine Levels  To make sure your hot tub experience is safe for you and everyone else, you need to manage your bromine levels. Levels should ideally be maintained between 3-5 ppm (parts per million). However, the exact dose depends on how big your hot tub is and how frequently you use it.   It’s best that you regularly test the water with testing strips or liquid kits to make sure levels are well-balanced. If bromine levels drop too low, you just need to add a little more. However, if they’re too high, dilute your hot tub’s water with fresh, non-treated water.  Application and Regular Maintenance  When you decide to add bromine to your hot tub for the very first time, you must do what we refer to as “shocking” the water. This means creating a powerful sanitization baseline that ensures bromine is continuously effective.   Once this is done, you must test the water every week and add more bromine as required.  If your tub has received a lot of use or the water looks cloudy, try using a bromine-based shock treatment to rid the water of contaminants and add extra fresh water.   So, Is Bromine Truly Safe & Good for Your Hot Tub?  Listen, if we haven’t answered it already: Bromine is not only completely safe if handled correctly, but it’s also a great option to use in hot tubs. It holds up even in hot temperatures and lasts longer than traditional chlorine treatments. It’s gentler than chlorine and has less of a harsh/irritating scent, too. It ensures you’re going to have the best, most relaxing hot tub experience.   TubTubs: Your Easy Solution to Maximum Hot Tub Efficiency  Do you need a better solution to keep your hot tub safe and clean all season long? Your Brain on Bubbles: The Science Behind Hot Tub Stress Relief

by John O'Rourke on Jun 24 2025
Stress! It's an emotion we all experience, especially in a fast-paced world with zero signs of slowing down.  These days, we’re always on the move while being completely connected to just about everything: the news, our friends and family, work, and more, thanks to technology. The term “doomscrolling” comes to mind, too.  This connection, while valuable in its own way, has shown signs of increasing a sense of stress and anxiety in the general public. Pair that with work, school, and family – it’s no wonder everyone is tense!  The solution? Relaxation.   Since we’re getting scientific here, why don’t we discuss your brain on bubbles? In this blog post, we’re going to explore the science behind hot tub stress relief and how it can improve your physical and mental health.   TubTabs has your back and can help you relax! Let’s get right into it:  The Impact of Stress on the Body  Believe it or not, stress does serve a practical purpose in terms of survival. Stress is effectively our body’s “fight or flight” response, which is designed to keep us alive in potentially dangerous situations.   Stress increases the heart rate to pump blood into the muscles; it releases adrenaline and cortisol to spike blood glucose and free fatty acids to jack up the brain and muscles; it heightens awareness and alertness; and more.   Basically, stress prepares you for battle or retreat! But you can’t exactly brawl 15 new Monday morning emails or retreat from your three kids who have the flu.   In the modern age, stress serves more as an indicator of other factors that impact our lives, primarily our responsibilities, such as work, school, childcare, etc. Personal and emotional situations play a significant part, too.   Here’s a comprehensive list of the physical impact stress has on your body:  Increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure  Muscle tension and aches (commonly in the neck, shoulders, and back)  Elevated cortisol and adrenaline levels  Headaches and migraines  Digestive issues (i.e., nausea, indigestion, or diarrhea)  Weakened immune function, leading to more frequent infections  Sleep disturbances (insomnia or restless sleep)  Changes in appetite (over- or under-eating)  Respiratory problems (i.e., rapid or shallow breathing)  Fatigue and decreased energy levels  Skin issues (i.e, acne flare-ups, eczema)  Hormonal imbalances (affecting menstrual cycles, libido)  Cognitive effects (difficulty concentrating, memory lapses)  Increased blood sugar levels  Heightened risk of cardiovascular disease over time  The majority of these situations are unavoidable, which means the only real solution other than a change of scenery is stress management. More on that later.  The Impact of Stress on the Mind  Hey, it isn’t just the body that suffers when chronic stress wreaks havoc; your mind suffers, too. The mental impact of continuous stress truly isn’t good for you and can negatively affect you in several ways.   Here’s how the mental impact of stress manifests:   Irritability or aggression  A feeling of loss of control  Insomnia  Fatigue or exhaustion  Sadness, fits of crying, or despair  Concentration or memory problems  Anxiety and depression  Burnout  And more.  According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, one in five Canadians will face a mental health crisis or receive a mental illness diagnosis — and by age 40, that figure rises to one in two.  If you consistently struggle with mental illness or despair, this can start to impact other areas of your life. It could impact your work, your relationships, your ability to enjoy hobbies, your motivation to work out or do other tasks, etc. The proven solution to mitigate this mental and emotional impact is good stress management.  The Science Behind Hot Tubs & Stress Relief  Hot tubs aren’t just cool for a backyard party and soirée (although they are great for those, too); they’ve been proven to have many positive effects when it comes to stress relief.   Before we get into the science, let's just take a practical look at things:  It's been a long, hard day of work, school, caring for the kids, etc. Your shoulders hurt, your mind is heavy, you're tired, frustrated, and in desperate need of relaxation. You drop your things and look outside: there it is, the hot tub. Suddenly, you already feel some of that tension releasing just by imagining a nice, long soak.   You grab a tasty drink, put on your bathing clothes, and finally sit down in a nice, clean, jet-filled hot tub. That shoulder tension releases, your mind goes blank, your pores soak up the steam, and you audibly say:  "Ahh..." (cue relaxation music)  Now here’s the actual science:   Stress Reduction  Hot tubs are proven to help relieve the stress you experience on a day-to-day basis. Warm water paired with the massaging action of a hot tub can help reduce physical and mental/emotional stress.  Also, if you want to supercharge your relaxation, you can also include additional relaxing measures, such as incorporating aromatherapy with your long soak in the hot tub.   Myorelaxation (Muscle Relaxation)  There is probably nothing better for tense and painful muscles than sitting in hot water with massaging jets working out the knots and kinks in your body. Hot tubs are effective for relaxing and soothing tight, tense muscles and can help ease common aches and pains. It can also be impactful if you struggle with sore joints caused by physical strain or arthritis. Soaking in a hot tub before exercising may also help lower your risk of injury.  Lower Heart Disease Risks  Having a nice, relaxing soak in a hot tub can also increase your heart rate and lower your blood pressure. A 2020 Japanese study followed more than 30,000 people who took regular very hot baths over the course of 19 years. These participants were found to have a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease.  An older study also showed that passive heat therapy could reduce cardiovascular risk and mortality, especially in those who have limited physical ability to exercise.   Better Sleep   Did you know a hot soak can help you sleep? Just ask the National Library of Medicine.  In one study, six healthy young women (aged 22–24) who didn’t normally exercise took two 90-minute baths — one warm, one cool — in the late afternoon on different days. The warm bath raised their core body temperature by about 1.8 °C, while the cool bath left it unchanged. That night, their brain activity during sleep was recorded and compared to a normal night without any bath.  After the cool bath, their sleep patterns didn't change when compared to any regular night. However, after the warm bath, participants reported feeling sleepier before bed and spent more time in the deepest stages of sleep.  Now, imagine soaking in a temperature-controlled, clean, crisp hot tub with several massaging jets. You’ll be sleeping like a baby afterwards, guaranteed.   Pain Reduction Soaking in a hot tub has been shown to relieve various types of pain by easing tense muscles, tendons, and joints. As mentioned, heat and massaging can really help ease arthritis by reducing stiffness and inflammation.  According to a study conducted in 2021, hydrotherapy (comparable to a hot tub soak) was proven to be more effective than even physiotherapy when it comes to improving pain, stiffness, and muscle strength after a total knee arthroplasty (AKA joint replacement surgery). How crazy is that?  Let's break it down: water takes the weight off your joints by supporting your body through buoyancy. This gives even those with physical limitations a greater range of motion while reducing the impact it has on the body. Taking a soak in the hot tub and even doing light exercise or movement in the tub can be greatly beneficial in easing pain.   You heard it here first: get a hot tub and soak in it – FOR HEALTH!  Additional Benefits of Hot Tub Relaxation  OK, we talked science. Let’s talk practicality and fun now. What are some of the other benefits of having a well-maintained hot tub? The Hidden Struggle of Hot Tub Maintenance (And Why It Doesn't Have to Be This Way)

by John O'Rourke on May 23 2025
Owning a hot tub should be all about luxury and relaxation: steaming water, bubbling jets, a crisp night sky… that perfect moment of pure escape. But for many hot tub owners, the dream quickly collides with an unexpected reality: the maintenance.  Maintaining a hot tub can sometimes feel like a full-time job. Balancing chemicals, managing sanitizer levels, fighting against cloudy water, battling foam, and keeping the plumbing and pumps in good health — it's enough to make some owners wonder if it's even worth it.   If you've ever spent your Saturday afternoon hunched over a testing strip, squinting at colour charts, you know exactly what we mean (“Is this supposed to be dark yellow, or light orange?”)  The Chemical Juggling Act of Hot Tub Water Maintenance  The first major hurdle for most hot tub owners is the chemistry. Water balance isn't just "nice to have" — it's critical for your health and for the longevity of your tub. Getting it wrong can mean bacteria growth, skin irritation, damaged equipment, and costly repairs.  Typically, maintaining a hot tub involves juggling:  Sanitizers (like chlorine or bromine)  pH increasers and degreasers  Alkalinity boosters  Shock treatments  Water clarifiers  Anti-foam agents  Scale preventers  Pipe and pump cleaners  Each chemical has its own role, and they interact in ways that can be tricky to manage. Adjusting one often affects the others. It's not just "add and forget" — you need constant testing, adjusting, and rebalancing to keep good hot tub maintenance. It's chemistry class all over again, except this time, the final exam comes every week.  You probably didn’t buy a hot tub expecting to become a part-time chemist. In fact, it’s probably the opposite: you bought it to relax, to recover from those long days, and to make the most of your precious downtime outdoors.  Plus, most new hot tub owners don’t get a crash-course on hot tub maintenance. At most, you might leave the store with a long list of products to buy (from them, of course, at mark-ups that’ll make your eyes water.) That’s it.  So, it’s really no wonder that hot tub maintenance feels like a struggle. It’s not your fault! This stuff shouldn’t be complicated, and the good news is, it doesn't have to be (stick with us, and we’ll show you how.)  But first thing’s first, let’s go through some of the most common headaches we hear about from hot tub owners like you. We’ll get into what causes them and look at the ‘conventional’ solutions you’ll hear from most hot tub stores. Then, we’ll talk about a different approach – one we think you’ll agree makes hot tub maintenance much simpler.  1. The Mystery of Cloudy Hot Tub Water  Even owners who are careful about testing often find themselves facing cloudy hot tub water. Maybe your sanitizer level dipped too low, maybe the pH crept too high, maybe organic debris built up. Whatever the cause, clearing cloudy water usually requires even more chemicals: shock treatments, clarifiers, and a reset of your sanitizer levels.  The worst part? Cloudy water can return quickly, and sometimes without a clear cause. Many frustrated owners end up draining and refilling their tubs more often than they'd like — wasting time, money, and water.  2. Hot Tub Foam: The Unexpected Enemy  Hot tub foam seems harmless — maybe even a little bit fun — until you realize it's often a sign of trouble. And gross. Really gross.  Foam usually forms because of oils, lotions, detergents, and organic buildup (including skin oil and sweat) in the water. Once it starts, it can be stubborn to remove.   Anti-foam agents are a band-aid solution, but ultimately, foam means your water chemistry isn't where it should be.  Fighting foam requires:  Draining and refilling (again)  Rebalancing all your chemicals  Sometimes replacing filters prematurely  Again, more time, more cost, more frustration.  3. Hot Tub Pipe and Pump Problems  One of the lesser-known (but highly critical) aspects of hot tub maintenance is taking care of the internal plumbing. Biofilm — a slimy buildup of millions upon millions of bacteria — can grow inside pipes and pumps where sanitizer levels are lower. Most people just call it ‘gunk’.  And this gunk isn't shy. Biofilm, like most bacteria, unfortunately, thrives in dark, hot water (that’s anything over 90°F or 32°C). The bacteria that forms hot tub biofilm can reproduce in as little as 20 minutes. That means leaving your hot tub for just a few hours without proper disinfection can lead to billions of times more bacteria than when you stepped away.  Once biofilm forms, it becomes extremely resistant to normal sanitizers. Even with sanitizers designed for hot tubs, this biofilm will stubbornly stick around unless the concentration is kept consistently high (at least 1 ppm for chlorine and 2 ppm bromine).  To prevent this, many owners perform "pipe cleanings" as part of their hot tub maintenance every few months using specialized chemicals that break down biofilm. It's messy, smelly, and adds yet another to-do to the list. And if you don't keep that sanitizer concentration just right afterwards, the biofilm can quickly return, sending you right back to square one. It all comes back to chemistry.  4. It's Easy to Fall Behind  The hard truth is that many people fall behind on hot tub maintenance because it's complicated, time-consuming, and easy to forget. And sometimes, life just happens – it’s not always somebody’s fault. But in any case, falling behind often leads to:  Algae or bacterial contamination  Damaged pumps, filters, and heaters  Unpleasant smells  Skin rashes or eye irritation  Expensive repairs or even tub replacement  When you're struggling to keep up, hot tub stores often point you towards an all-in-one hot tub maintenance system. Traditionally, this meant a big bundle of expensive chemicals (and sometimes ‘cubes’) designed to work together, complete with a strict schedule for what to use and when.   The idea is that if all the products are all part of one system and clearly labelled, it’ll be easier to manage, and you'll be less likely to forget or make mistakes.  But these bundled systems come with their own set of issues. Cost is a big one; it’s tough to stick to a maintenance plan that costs an arm and a leg.   Then, there’s the fact that these niche chemicals and ‘cubes’, designed as a closed system, might not work well with any other products you might already have. The expectation is that you'll use their brand, and nothing else.  And finally, even with fancy packaging, a bundle of numerous products is still numerous products to juggle. In the end, you might find you're just as likely to fall behind.  Which brings us to a very important question: Isn't there a better way?  Simplifying Hot Tub Maintenance in 2 Easy Steps  Thankfully, innovation has arrived. Instead of buying, measuring, adjusting, and guessing at multiple different chemicals, it's now possible to manage your hot tub water in just 2 easy steps.  TubTabs are a unique water maintenance tablet designed to replace all the various chemicals people currently need for hot tub maintenance — pH balance, water clarity, scale prevention, pipe cleaning, and more. Instead of pulling out a chemistry kit every week, you simply drop a TubTab into your tub.  And when it comes to sanitation, a traditional bromine sanitizer is still necessary. That's where BroTabs come in. BroTabs provide reliable, no-frills bromine sanitation — but the magic happens when paired with TubTabs. The TubTab "supercharges" the BroTab, ensuring that sanitizer levels stay consistent and effective all week long.  For a normal-sized hot tub, it's as simple as:  1 TubTab + 1 BroTab every week.  That's it.  No more cloudy water. No more foam battles. No more guessing if your pipes are clean or your sanitizer is still active. And, best of all, no more struggling with a closet full of expensive chemical "potions" with a schedule as convoluted as an international airport.  Benefits of a Simplified Hot Tub Water Maintenance System  Maintenance Task  Traditional Method  TubTabs + BroTabs  Test water  ❌ 3–4x/week  ✅ Not needed  Add chemicals  ❌ Multiple messy liquids and cubes  ✅ Just 2 simple tablets  Fix cloudy water  ❌ Frequent  ✅ Rare  Fix foam buildup  ❌ Frequent  ✅ Rare  Clean pipes  ❌ Every 3 months  ✅ Not needed  Monthly chemical cost  💲💲💲 High  💲 Low    Save Time: Spend less time testing, balancing, and adjusting.  Save Money: Fewer products to buy, fewer emergency repairs.  Better Water Quality: Crystal-clear, fresh-smelling water week after week.  Longer Equipment Life: Protect your pumps, pipes, filters, and heaters.  More Relaxation: Focus on enjoying your tub, not managing it.  Hot tubs are supposed to be a haven of relaxation, not a source of stress. With the right maintenance system, you can get back to what you bought the hot tub for in the first place: pure, effortless enjoyment. You’ve earned it.  Hot Tub Maintenance Doesn’t Have to be a Struggle  If you've been feeling overwhelmed with hot tub care, know that you're not alone — and that a simpler way is finally here. With just two small additions to your routine, maintaining a sparkling, healthy hot tub can be as easy as lighting a candle or pressing "start" on your jets.  Life is complicated enough. Your hot tub maintenance doesn't have to be.  Interested in learning more about TubTabs and BroTabs? See how they make hot tub maintenance a whole lot simpler.
